Somashekhar, the SuperCop

He is the hero of the hour

For the man of the moment, this has been the most satisfying of cases. Somashekhar, who helped crack the triple murder case in days, is a head constable attached to Nandini Layout police station. He was transferred to Nandini Layout only two months ago, much against the will of DCP (crime), who wanted Somashekhar to be posted in CCB.
Somashekhar had worked in Fraser Town, Shivajinagar and KG Halli for more than 25 years and had developed many informants. When the triple murder took place, he alerted some of his informants.
On Tuesday, Somashekhar went to bed around 11 pm. Half an hour later, he received a call from one of the informants. Somashekhar was told that the informant was having drinks at Hennur with a person, who was allegedly part of the triple murder.

Somashekhar immediately called up two of his colleagues — Praveen and Raaghu — who were also sleeping and asked them to meet him immediately. The three reached Hennur within the next one hour.
There, Bhaskar was with the informant, enjoying a drink and not realizing that the three newcomers were cops. When Somashekhar slowly started talking about the triple murder, Bhaskar knew that his game was up. In the next 20 minutes, Bhaskar revealed the entire story and the places where they had hidden the gold jewellery and the scotch they had stolen from the house.
The three cops quickly picked up Lokesh as well as Murali and recovered all the stolen valuables, including the motorcycle they had used to commit the offence. They called up
Nandini Layout inspector Chandrashekhar, who asked them to bring the three to the police station. By 2.30 am, the interrogation of the three began in the police station, when the three narrated the entire story.
BIDARI PRAISES CONSTABLE
City police commissioner Shankar Bidari was all praise for Somashekhar and Nandini Layout police. Announcing Rs 10,000 cash award for Somashekhar and inspec
tor Chandru, Bidari said that the team had worked in true police spirit.”Though the crime had not taken place in their jurisdiction, they treated the information as if it was their own case. They did not even waste a minute, when they got the information and acted fast,’’ he said.
HIS BLOOD BOILED
“When I saw that child’s photos on TV and papers, I had mixed reactions. First, I was depressed as to how someone can kill such an innocent child. Immediately, my blood boiled and I felt like catching the culprit and tearing him into pieces. But, even in my wildest dreams, I did not believe that I would nab them,’’ said Somashekhar.
Soon after hearing about the triple murder, Somashekhar began contacting his old informants and discussing the possible people behind the murder. He strongly believed that someone from the nearby area was behind it. He also sent one or two informants to the areas around Nagawara, where some blocks of slums are inhabited by criminals.

“When I got the call, I was not too sure that the person was involved in the triple murder. But I could not take chances, though it was in the middle of the night. I just dressed up and walked out of the house. Even after Bhaskar confessed to the crime, I was not too sure till we recovered the jewellery,’’ Somashekhar said.
“More than anything, I am happy to have nabbed those three, who not only wiped out a family, but also killed an eight-year-old innocent child,’’ Somashekhar added. TNN
